Kenya Nyeri Thageini AA

John Says...

This Kenyan is one of the best coffees I have had the pleasure of roasting this year. It will be available on siphon and as whole bean.

Thageini is part of the Aghuti Cooperative Farmers Society and is one of the washing stations producing consistently excellent coffee. This crop was purchased direct, not through the Kenyan auction, so a higher price was paid by our buyer so they would not risk losing this crop.

In the cup it's fruit punch aromatics with pink grapefruit, and raw sugar punctuated by plum, grape juice, and pineapple as it cools, with just a subtle hint of cinnamon. Phenomenal.

The recent crop of Kenyan coffees has been outstanding, so you can look forward to several more offerings in the coming weeks.

Kenya Kirinyaga Kiangoi AB

Yiching says--

It's been quite busy at the shop, and John's been roasting a lot. There are many new coffees this season that John's been putting up on the shelves and also featuring on our siphon coffee menu. I, however, have not been at the shop much and therefore haven't been posting much about these coffees... but here I am, determined to post more and tell you more about some of the most popular beans we're offering at caffe d'bolla.

Lots of coffee roasting on this cool and rainy day. Come pick up some beans! #singleorigin #coffeebeans #coffeeroaster #caffedbolla #slc #coffee #roaster

And this post is about a super delicious African coffee-- Kenya Kirinyaga Kiangoi AB.

Kiangoi is a coffee mill in Kenya. It is one of he processing stations of the Rung'eto Farmers Cooperative Society. While we like estate coffees, sometimes the quality from certain co-ops is superior. In a cooperative, each member is tending to only 200-500 trees on less than a hectare, as opposed to a huge estate that uses agribusiness growing methods. This more "personal" attention is reflected in the cup. Outstanding!

In the cup it's grape, mango, mulling spices, and vanilla bean with a refreshing apple acidity.

Come pick up a bag before it's done for the season!

Kenya Nyeri Gaturiri AB

Another great Kenya has been great On Siphon at caffe d'bolla - Kenya Nyeri Gaturiri AB.

Gaturiri is a cooperative wet-processing mill, near the town of Karatina in the heart of Nyeri. It is part of the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society. This lot was purchased direct, outside the auction format. It means our buyer had to pay a premium to ensure the final cost was at or above what the auction price might be.

In the cup it's blackberry, concord grape, cranberry, and lemonade with a toffee and brown sugar sweetness in the finish. An exceptional Kenyan.

So delicious. Come try it!

Kenya Nyeri Ndaro-ini AB

We had an all-African siphon menu this past week, and everyone loved these coffees!

Kenya Nyeri Ndaro-ini AB has been superb on siphon.

Ndaro-ini Factory is near Karatina town in the Nyeri District f central Kenya and is part of the Gikanda Cooperative Society, which is made up from the Gichatha-ini, Kangocho, and Ndaro-ini Cooperatives. The name takes the first few letters of each factory/wet mill. Ndaro-ini Factory sits at about 1600 masl, and is planted mostly with SL-28 varietal, which is consistently the top Kenyan varietal.

In the cup it's juicy blackberry and apple with honey sweetness and a balanced cinnamon and cardamon spice essence. An incredible coffee.

Kenya Nyeri AB Gatomboya

John has been roasting coffee almost every other day to keep the shelves filled. Delicious Single Origin coffees for you everyday!

One of the most popular coffees this week is Kenya Nyeri AB Gatomboya.

Gatomboya is a small wet mill and washing station aligned with Barichu Coffee Society. Just like last year, our buyer did not want to risk losing this coffee in a bidding war at auction, so they bought it direct from the cooperative at a premium to secure this lot. This coffee shipped vacuum packed, like all the small producer lots from Kenya, in order to maintain pristine quality.

In the cup it's ripe stone fruit, from peach skin, to the heavier note of the mango. Honey sweetness and hints of cocoa linger throughout the cup. A wonderful coffee.

Kenya Nyeri Gaturiri

Roasted and Bagged!

Gaturiri is a cooperative wet-processing mill, near the town of Karatina in the heart of Nyeri. It is part of the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society. With this lot, our buyer didn't want to risk entering the Kenya auction for a great coffee like this, so it was bought direct, outside the auction format. It means he had to pay a premium to ensure the final cost was at or above what the auction price might be.

In the cup it's raisin, plum preservative, cinnamon, and hints of nutmeg. Plum pudding creaminess as it cools.

Kenya Nyeri AB Gatomboya

Roasted, and ready for the holidays!

We've been roasting many wonderful Single Origin Coffees for the shop and people are getting them for themselves and for their loved ones as gift! This morning John roasted our first batch of Kenya Nyeri AB Gatomboya, and people are loving it already!

Gatomboya is a small washing station aligned with a particular "society" which is what they call cooperatives in Kenya. This is part of the same group as Gaturiri, which we sold about a moth ago. Our buyer purchased this coffee direct so they would not risk missing it at auction. This coffee was shipped vacuum sealed from Kenya to protect it against moisture on the long voyage.

In the cup it's tangy peach, nectarine, and orange, with red grapefruit as it cools. Clove, cocoa and honey sweetness join to present an amazingly sweet and balanced cup. Outstanding!

Kenya Nyeri Gaturiri Peaberry

John has been roasting Single Origins since we came back from Seoul, and trying to fill the shelves with fresh roasted coffee has been keeping us busy (and happy!)

One of the coffees that is flying off the shelves is Kenya Nyeri Gaturiri Peaberry.

Gaturiri is a cooperative wet mill located in the heart of Nyeri. This was the most expensive coffee for our buyer out of Kenya this year. A higher price was paid to purchase directly from the cooperative in order to secure it rather than taking a chance it would be sold out at auction. This coffee was a favorite in 2010 and 2011. This year's cup is phenomenal.

In the cup it's sweet, bright, and fruited. Red currant, black cherry, and raspberry with grape and red apple sweetness emerging as it cools. Excellent!

Roasting Roasting Roasting

John has been roasting coffee since we came back from our trip. We've also been keeping our "coffee bagging station" busy. Here are a few coffees that we just put out:

Costa Rica Finca Salaca - las Brisas: Concord grape, apple, and blackberry.

Nicaragua Acopio Suyatal: Malt, ginger, caramel, chocolate, and grape.

Kenya Nyeri Gaturiri Peaberry: Raspberry, red currant, black cherry, grape and red apple.

These are delicious! Come try it on the siphon, or get a bag and make your own at home today!

And to get updates on what caffe d'bolla is offering, remember to find us on twitter and facebook.

Kenya AA - Nyeri Kiamaina Tasting Notes

John Says...

Today I tested a batch of the new Kenya AA Nyeri Kiamaina.

This batch was roasted to a City Roast at 9:00 AM this morning.
Testing was done at 6:00 PM.

I brewed several batches in the Siphon brewer, and even on day one, the flavors are coming through. Peach and maybe a hint of floral apricot in the aroma. Peach and lemon up front, with the peach dominating as the cup cools. A sweet and balanced finish of peach and honey.

I found this coffee to be exceptionally clean, even by my radical standards. It's truly a magnificent coffee and creates a cup you will long remember.

Roaster's Choice 072607 Kenya AA Muranga Kariani

This Kenyan coffee comes from a district that lies between Nyeri and Thicka. It has a sweet blackberry flavor throughout the cup and black currant notes as it cools.

While it is lower in acidity than other Kenyans, it provides a refreshing and remarkable cup.

Kenya Ndaroini Nyeri

We are featuring this wonderful Kenyan coffee for our press-pot coffee.
It has a wonderful spice (clove, coriander) aromatics, and is black current, spice, and a dark berry flavor in the cup. Come try a cup before it's gone!
