and they were robbed

Ryan who works at the board shop next door came to get coffee today and told us a crazy story.

A guy went in to their shop last night, looked at stuff, and asked Adam (one of the owners of the shop) if he had his size certain style shoes. Adam went to the back room to grab the shoes and when he came out the guy apparently had grabbed a specialty longboard and took off. Adam ran out the door and saw the guy just got out of the buildling.

Adam ran after the guy, only to find that the thief was gone. Ryan said the stolen longboard was top of the line and so far no one has bought one yet.

I felt really bad for the board shop. When their stuff is stolen, they lose hundreds of dollars. I guess my under $100 loss over the stolen jewelry was not that bad... but still, f*(& the scum bag thieves!

stolen

Yiching says--

I just found that somebody stole stuff from my little boutique at the caffe. I picked these great Hello Kitty and other great design steel key chains while we were in Japan.

I put some out and people love them! However I just found out that a 3-piece Hello Kitty and a Star with crystals key chains ($60 value!)were stolen! I'm sad. I try to bring fun and pretty things to people and allow them freedome to browse the boutique, but then these lovely key chains were stolen, along with some other chunky rings a few weeks ago... boooooo!

Booooo the person/people who stole my stuff, and don't blame the language I'm using toward the person/people in my head, I'm just going to gently put those words down as f&*# 'em. f&*# 'em 'til they rot in h&*#.

Zambia AA+ Lupili Estate

Yiching Says--

A lot of the single origin and blend coffee John roasts for the caffe are from South America, but for this week he roasted the Zambia AA+ Lupili Estate coffee from East Africa to be our featured Press Pot Coffee.

The Zambia AA+ Lupili Estate has a bright tangerine acidity in the cup, along with a smooth caramel undertone. It also has a distinctive East African sage/goldenseal flavor in the aftertaste. Delicious!

loaded Chewy Pearls

A nice guy from Ogden comes down to Salt Lake once in a while and stops by the caffe to get his bubble tea. He usually likes to add $1.50 worth of extra Chewy Pearls in his bubble tea. Today he did the same thing, in a 16oz. cup. It's truly loaded.

sheep go to heaven

Yiching says--

The weather is really weird today. It started snowing and hailing this morning and it has not yet stopped! Our satellite radio of course went out again because of all the snow that's probably covering the dish on the roof.

But I managed to play Cake off the player right now. It's working quite well so far.

no more apricots

Yiching says--

Thanks for all of your kind words and concerns. John is feeling a bit better now. I guess there won't be any dried apricots for him for a while!

We ARE OPEN today. I decided to come and open the store, but since John was still having a slight fever, I had him stay at home with the dogs. So I took the tables and chairs out onto the patio and everything!

So if you'd like to come down to the caffe today, see me and have a great drink, please do so.

Yiching says--

Sorry for any inconvenience. We look forward to seeing you soon.

puck cake

Yiching says--

A lovely coffee ground "puck" will come out of a properly extracted shot of espresso, and just to show John that I've been pulling good shots, I collected some coffee pucks to make a coffee puck cake. Fun! Maybe we can try to make a puck castle some time in the future.

New Blinds

Yiching says--

Every sunny afternoon, especially in the winter/spring time, the sun will shine through our big brick glass windows and tries to blind us. BUT NOT ANY MORE! John put up a couple of blinds for us this week. Not only do they help protect us from the blinding sunlight, they also look cool when thile they filter the light!

Tony is Cool

Tony is an old gentleman who comes to the caffe everyday and has our Press Pot Coffee or a traditional espresso drink. He never asks for our "Press Pot," but he'd ask for "the Costa Rican today, please," or "the organic Guatemalen Coban today, please," as far as this week goes. When he comes we talk about Europe, war, history, and our dogs, and then he'd read the paper and have his coffee.

Tony is cool, and as our friend Brian said, "He's like a character in an animation or manga." Truly.

Organic Guatemalen Coban

John is really excited to roast and introduce the Organic Guatemalen Coban for our Press Pot Coffee this week. This bean brews a sweet, winey, and fruity cup. This light-bodied coffee has a pleasant intensity in the finish and develops a heavier body as it cools. Yum!

Testing Shots

Yiching Says--

John thought the espresso was a bit "off" this morning. He was tweaking the machine and testing shots throughout the morning. I think he had 30ish shots. Crazy man. But the good thing is, the espresso is "right on" now.

Restless Lizard Blend

Yiching says--

John finally revealed the name of the mystery blend of coffee-- Restless Lizard Blend.

This blend of select Brazilian Yellow Bourbon and the finest Colombian Huila creates a complex cup with notes of raisin and fig intertwined with a smooth and nutty honey-molasses coffee eseence.

Whether relaxed or on the go, this is the perfect coffee for any environment. (Got it? ^__^)

Mystery Blend

Yiching Says--

John roasted a couple batches of beans the other day and said, "Ahhh, this is going to be an interesting blend. Good, and interesting blend."

All I know about the blend so far is that it will consist some Brazilian and Colombian beans of some sorts, and that they smell fantastic. When Doris, who loves our Press Pot Coffee, was just here, John told her that the beans are ready to be tested and blended today and that he'll let her sample some of the new coffee tomorrow.

Hmm... the mystery blend of beans...

Fresh Roasted Press Pot Coffee

John says...

We are now offering fresh roasted press pot coffee.
Right now, we are 'brewing' a Costa Rica Tres Rios -
La Magnolia.

This is a wonderfully dynamic coffee with citrus floral and sweet aromatics. It has a refreshing tangerine and classic coffee taste with a sweet finish.
Cool.

Good Cause for Paws and a Treat for You!

We have sent out email to our friends before Christmas and told them all about our "Good Cause for Paws and a Trea for You!" this holiday season.

We, along with hundreds of homeless dogs and cats, invited them to join us to help homeless pets. Yiching went down to the animal shelters and got a list of items the dogs and cats need the most: dog & cat toys, dog & cat treats, blankets, and bundled newspapers. ALL donations will go to the homeless pets.

If you have received our email, or just read this message, and would like to donate, remember to bring the items in before the end of the year this time. As a thank you, you can enjoy a 12oz. caffe latte on us.
Some of you have already brought great presents for the dogs and cats in the shelters. Thank you! Please continue to help the animals in need.

Lemon Sorbetto is Yummy

Yiching Says--

I'm glad people are still loving the gelato in this 28ish degree weather. More people are bringing the gelato home in the pints, too. I've been diggin' lemon sorbetto recently. We use real lemon juice in this thing and OMG it's super delish. Everyone should try it.

Synesso

John Says--

It's been almost 1 month since we first got our 2 group Synesso Cyncra installed.

I've been waiting a year and a half for this machine and I won't be the first to tell you that it's a joy to use.

Stable temperature profile means getting that 'sweet spot' in the espresso every time. The groupheads are individually adjustable so you can use two different blends, or with some experimentation, you can extract different flavor profiles from one single blend.

It only took a little experimentation to narrow down the perfect espresso.

What's best, it's a semi-auto, so none of that automatic BS.
An involved barista is a happy barista!

so with the Synesso in place, I will continue to sharpen my barista skills.
It's me against the world, one cup at a time, and baby, I'm ready to kick ass!

...C'mon, have a sense of humor. :)

John the Technician!?

Yiching Says--

John claims he's adjusting the espresso machine and keeping it sound. He takes it apart and says he's "working on it." Hmm...

Power Outage sadness

Yiching says--

While I was steaming a Chai last night there was a weird noise and then the power was out at the caffe. One of the chefs upstaris ran down and screamed, "what happened? what happened?" and ran out.

We later on found out that our little block was out of electricity. The lady from Charlie Chows came by our door and was apparently angry because she had customers who just finished eating and walked out without paying. And then she said something I couldn't quite understand.

By the time we left the power was still not back. A customer told us some pipes broke and then there were power line problems of some sort. When we arrive this morning our computer was completely messed up, and we had to replace some supplies. I was swearing the whole morning.

But anyway, John's trying to transfer the data from our old computer to a new one we just got today (if the old one would stay hang on there and stay alive...), and we're resetting our machines and getting new supplies. We're closed today but we will be open tomorrow morning.

Holiday Pizzelle

We made some fresh traditional pizzelle so you can come and try some and/or bring some home! These are made with anise. When we were making them at the caffe in the morning, people would come in and say, "Did I smell black licorice?" It's yummy.

P.S. Pizelle: The word pizzella (singular, pizzelle is plural) literally means "small round and flat bread" and in this case, a thin, pretty, round and yummy cookie!

Earl Green

Yiching says--

People ask what my favorite tea is. I usually tell them I go through phases, which is true. I don't think I have one favorite tea, but I do particularly love Green and Oolong. I think it's mainly because I grew up with these two types of teas. My mom makes them all the time at home and we'd just drink tea like crazy.

With that being said, my favorite tea this week is Earl Green. "The classic citrus aroma associated with Earl Grey comes from an essential oil pressed from a rare citrus fruit called bergamot. We use fragrant "Pouchong" tealeaves from Taiwan to create an Earl Green unlike any other. Notice the sweet, lingering citrus elements that harmonize with the high grown notes of lilac and wild orchid." It's super yummy!

For those of you who received our email the other day, be sure to read it, find and use the little offer in it... the offer ends this weekend!
